Project background
Kings Critical Care Centre is radically changing the way it care for the most seriously ill and injured patients by creating a new world class Critical Care Centre. Each year the dedicated team of nurses and doctors provide critical care for over 3,600 people who urgently require lifesaving medical treatment. The new £68 million Critical Care Unit will provide natural light, uplifting art-work and home comforts.
Challenges
Construction of a new Critical Care Unit above an existing theatre block in a busy working hospital was always going to prove difficult. Also challenged by a city centre site with limited access and a main line rail network beside the site, management logistics and careful planning were required by the team headed up by main contractor McLaughlin & Harvey. The irregular shaped corrugated sheeting that carries the concrete floor above would prove difficult to insulate from the exposed un-insulated plant room due to several reasons including the weight of the plant resting on the floor.
The solution
Architects BMJ turned to WALLTITE® CL100 to provide the versatile insulation that could be sprayed from below onto the underside of the corrugated sheet-ing, providing the required U-value and Class 0 fire rating. WALLTITE® CL100 spray foam polyure-thane system was installed with special-ist equipment supplied by the Foam Master and had the bonus of requiring no product storage on this limited site. WALLTITE® produced a rigid seamless insulation layer with no joints, gaps or waste.
